Update on Tybee Drowning
Shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday night, a 33-year-old man drowned after jumping from the pier on Tybee Island. The Tybee Island Fire Department received the 911 call at 8:22 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing the man on the railing of the pier and then heard him calling for help from the water after he apparently got caught in the tides.
Following a three-hour search, the victim was spotted by a Chatham Marine Patrol helicopter in shallow water north of the pier. Tybee Island Firefighters recovered the body at 11:25 p.m. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family.
The search efforts involved resources from Tybee Island Fire Department, Tybee Island Police Department, U.S. Coast Guard USCG), Chatham Helicopter (Eagle One), Savannah Fire Boat (Mutual Aid with USCG) and Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron.
