[ARCHIVED] Tropical storm Michael update Tues, Oct 9, 2pm

Chatham County remains in Opcon3 in anticipation of Tropical Storm conditions affecting our area beginning tomorrow mid-day and continuing overnight into Thursday morning. Current forecast conditions are for sustained winds of 25-35mph with gusts as high as 45mph, particularly near the coast. 2 – 4 inches of rainfall are expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Significant saltwater inundation is not expected; however, the persistent winds associated with this system will keep tide levels slightly above astronomical high tide predictions, possibly approaching 9.5 ft over the next few high tide cycles.

The City of Tybee has closed all beaches to swimming until further notice and has suspended normal City operations including closing City offices tomorrow, 10/10. Critical workforce and Public Safety personnel will remain on duty throughout the duration of this event. Atlantic Waste has informed us that they will be running normal routes tomorrow, with a possible delay on Thursday.

This continues to be a “Shelter in Place” storm scenario. Secure all loose items, stock any necessary supplies in anticipation of power outages, top-off fuel tanks and have cash ready in place of credit cards. As always, continue to monitor your local media resources for the latest updates.
