  1. South Beach Ecology Walk

    June 22, 2019, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

    Join a marine science educator for a guided walk on Tybee’s south beach. Learn about the dynamics of the barrier islands of Georgia, the importance of the intertidal zone, the forces behind tides and waves, and sand dune formation. Identify the wildlife that live in and around the ocean and discuss the impact of marine debris and shoreline development. South Beach Walks meet at the Science Center.

  2. Turtle Talk

    June 22, 2019, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

    Loggerheads, Kemp's Ridley, Greens, and Leatherback sea turtles all nest on coastal Georgia's beaches. Join us to learn about the amazing lives of these sea turtles. We'll discuss anatomy, natural adaptations, why sea turtles cry, natal beaches, and Tybee Island's conservation efforts. Afterward we'll head down to the Coastal Gallery to feed our visiting loggerhead sea turtle. Recommended for ages six and above.

  3. Sift and Seine

    June 22, 2019, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

    Discover the marine life of the intertidal zone through seining. Pull a ten-foot seine net through waist deep water to catch, examine, and release marine life. Commonly caught organisms include pompanos, silversides, mullets, sea jellies, and crabs. After seining, we’ll explore the marine life of the sandy bottom by sifting various organisms from the wet sand on the beach. Recommended for participants nine years and older.

  4. Marsh Trek

    June 22, 2019, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center (Class meets off site. Details provided at registration.)

    Trek through Georgia’s salt marsh, where you’ll get hands-on exploration in the mud searching for fiddler crabs, snails, and more. Examine salty grasses, observe soaring marsh birds, and hum with periwinkle snails. Learn about adaptations necessary for survival in this environment, how the marsh functions as a nursery for many organisms, a filter for pollutants, and as an abundant food source. **REQUIRED - Please wear closed-toed, closed-heel shoes, such as rain boots or old tennis shoes (no flip flops or Crocs) and expect to get muddy.** The proper shoes are required to participate in the program. You will not be refunded if you do not wear the proper shoes. Not recommended for kids under six years old. Marsh Treks meet off-site, on the north end of the island at Spanish Hammock. Directions are emailed with paid program confirmation.

  5. Cats Under the Stars

    Jerry Garcia may be best known as the lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead, but his solo project for over 20 years, the Jerry Garcia Band, showcased Jerry’s famously varied musical interests. This was reflected in the diverse music he chose to play in JGB. From Irving Berlin, Bob Dylan, Allen Toussaint, Chuck Berry, The Sensational Nightingales, Smokey Robinson, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, The Manhattens and more! Dan Berman on guitar and vocals; Peter Roaman, Bass; Charlie Denison, keyboards, vocals; Billy McIntosh, drums; James Gartside, percussion and Samantha Belcher, vocals.
