  1. South Beach Ecology Walk

    May 23, 2019, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

    Join a marine science educator for a guided walk on Tybee’s south beach. Learn about the dynamics of the barrier islands of Georgia, the importance of the intertidal zone, the forces behind tides and waves, and sand dune formation. Identify the wildlife that live in and around the ocean and discuss the impact of marine debris and shoreline development. South Beach Walks meet at the Science Center.

  2. Turtle Talk

    May 23, 2019, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

    Loggerheads, Kemp's Ridley, Greens, and Leatherback sea turtles all nest on coastal Georgia's beaches. Join us to learn about the amazing lives of these sea turtles. We'll discuss anatomy, natural adaptations, why sea turtles cry, natal beaches, and Tybee Island's conservation efforts. Afterward we'll head down to the Coastal Gallery to feed our visiting loggerhead sea turtle. Recommended for ages six and above.

  3. Sift and Seine

    May 23, 2019, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

    Discover the marine life of the intertidal zone through seining. Pull a ten-foot seine net through waist deep water to catch, examine, and release marine life. Commonly caught organisms include pompanos, silversides, mullets, sea jellies, and crabs. After seining, we’ll explore the marine life of the sandy bottom by sifting various organisms from the wet sand on the beach. Recommended for participants nine years and older.

  4. Marsh Trek

    May 23, 2019, 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center (Class meets off site. Details provided at registration.)

    Trek through Georgia’s salt marsh, where you’ll get hands-on exploration in the mud searching for fiddler crabs, snails, and more. Examine salty grasses, observe soaring marsh birds, and hum with periwinkle snails. Learn about adaptations necessary for survival in this environment, how the marsh functions as a nursery for many organisms, a filter for pollutants, and as an abundant food source. **REQUIRED - Please wear closed-toed, closed-heel shoes, such as rain boots or old tennis shoes (no flip flops or Crocs) and expect to get muddy.** The proper shoes are required to participate in the program. You will not be refunded if you do not wear the proper shoes. Not recommended for kids under six years old. Marsh Treks meet off-site, on the north end of the island at Spanish Hammock. Directions are emailed with paid program confirmation.

    Consent Agenda Consideration begins at 6:30 PM Regular Meeting begins at 7:00 pm and continues until all business on the agenda has been addressed. Council Meetings take place on the second and fourth Thursday each month and are broadcast live on Comcast Cable Access Channel 7. Thereafter, recorded meetings are rebroadcast Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sat at both 10am and 7pm. Video-on-demand recordings can be found at http://cityoftybee.viebit.com.     In months where there is only one Council meeting (during some summer months as well as for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays), other times will be announced when known. The Public Safety Committee usually meets the fourth Thursday of each month in the conference room at the Public Safety Building at 78 Van Horn, at 10:00 AM. The Committee may also meet at other times as conditions dictate. Agenda are usually available within 24 hours preceding the meeting and will be posted in the WebLink archives when available.
