Mission Statement

The Tybee Island Economic Development Committee is comprised of Tybee Business owners and city government representatives, whose purpose is to identify, prioritize, and analyze opportunities, and make recommendations to city officials that will result in a positive impact to the economic development of Tybee Island's business community.

Creation and Purpose

A.        Pursuant to the Tybee Island City Council’s desire to develop incentives to encourage existing and future businesses, the council facilitated the formation of the Tybee Island Economic Development Committee.

B.         The purpose for creating the Tybee Island Economic Development Committee is to provide a facilitative and advisory resource to assist the City in developing business incentives. The Committee will also serve as a liaison between the city and the business community.

Article I

Membership

Section 1. Election/Appointment of Members:

The membership will be comprised of owners/operators of local businesses or owners of commercial property. Members will be elected by a majority vote of the Committee. The Mayor and Council of the City of Tybee Island shall designate two council members to serve on the Committee. 

Section 2. Membership:

A. The Tybee Island Economic Development Committee shall consist of at least seven, but no more than twelve members. Members will be elected on the basis of their operation of businesses and/or commercial property, their willingness to work as a liaison between the business community and city government, and their desire to cultivate a positive business climate on Tybee Island. No more than two council members will serve on the committee.

B. Individual Member Qualification:

 (1) When elected, and while serving as a member of the Committee, a person must:

(a) Operate a business on Tybee Island or own commercial property

(b) Have good moral character; and

(c) Be willing to discharge the duties of Committee membership.


Section 3. Period of Appointment:

Members are to be elected for staggered three year terms except for the first Tybee Island Economic Development Committee for which the following model will be adopted:

(a) The Chair, designated by the Committee, is to be appointed for a one year term; and

(b) One half of the remaining members are to be appointed for two year terms; and

(c) One half of the remaining members are to be appointed for three year terms.
