Election Notice/List of Declared Candidates





The following have submitted their Notice of Candidacy and have qualified to run for City Council seats in the November 7, 2017 election:

  • Notice is hereby given to the citizens of Tybee Island, Georgia that the General Municipal Election will be held November 7, 2017, between the hours of 7:00AM and 7:00PM for election of three (3) Council Members.

Qualifying begins Monday, August 21, 2017 at 8:30AM and closes August 24, 2017 at 4:30PM and will be held at:

          Tybee Island City Hall

          403 Butler Avenue

          Tybee Island, GA 31328

Qualifying Fees are:

                   Council Members:  $144.00

The deadline for registering to vote in the election is October 10, 2017

Brief description of Council duties:

Council members are responsible to attend Council and committee meetings as part of the normal duties of participating in City business. Council meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month with workshops held quarterly. There will be occasions for the Mayor to call special meetings on an as-need basis.

Attendance is expected at these meetings as well as special meetings, workshops and budget meetings. As a newly elected official, Council members are required by Georgia State Law to attend the Newly Elected Officials training. This training is held on February 15 – 17, 2018 in Athens or March 7 – 9, 2018 in Tifton. There are other training opportunities offered in January (Atlanta) and June (Savannah).

The Mayor will also request you to work with committees or local organizations as a liaison, such as the Historic Preservation Committee, Better Home Town, Marine Science Center, Infrastructure, etc.

In addition, the behaviors of Council members are subject to the Ethics Ordinance, which can be reviewed in Chapter 2, Article III, section 2-106, “Code of ethics for city officials”, at https://library.municode.com/ga/tybee_island/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTIICOOR_CH2AD_ARTIIIOFEM_S2-106COETOF.
